Lake Sakakawea Fishing Report-July 1st, 2019

What does Lake Sakakawea and a toilet bowl have in common right now? Well, it’s simple swirling water. If you have been on Sakakawea lately and think your trolling motor seems to be working harder than normal going certain directions you are correct. The water is doing a huge circle and with certain winds it’s really noticeable.
The water temps are traveling as is the water. I can’t help but believe the fish are traveling as well, and the current in the lake is dictating where these fish are being caught.
Some of the traditional areas of the lake haven’t been all that great yet. Other areas that usually take longer to get going, seem to be producing. The one common theme is the lake is still a top Walleye producer and it’s only going to continue to get better and better.
The fish we have been catching have not settled into any particular depth. I feel this has a lot to do with the currents in the lake mixing the water temps. Slow death rigs with propellers and half crawlers with quick swap and a plain old Lindy Rig with minnows also has been good. Water temps vary but average temp this week on the middle portion of the lake is right around 66 degrees.
If you haven’t been out now is the time to do so! I anticipate the Fourth of July weekend really firing up! If you want to book a day trip or multiple days with lodging get in touch with me either on my Facebook or email me at mikepelusooutdoors@gmail.com Lake Sakakawea has a PB (personal best) waiting for you!
