Lake Sakakawea Fishing Report-September 15th, 2018

I grew up fishing Lake Sakakawea and today on the water was one that really tested my strength and patience. When I say trust your electronics today on Big Sak would have been one of those days you would think the darn things were either on simulator mode or broken. The amount of fish I marked today and for the lack of them willing to bite was one for the ages. When I left my driveway this morning and my temperature gage said 44 degrees and the wind was blowing out of the east at 16 mph I figured things were going to be tough. Tough was an understatement for sure. We covered a lot of water today starting at a Deepwater Bay. We fished the West Slides to start and with the east wind I thought for sure t we could get some fish to go. We fished hard and stopped on marks but eventually the wind forced us over the the east slides. Of course for some reason today it was the same story.  Awesome marks with very few takers. We once again made a move to the Independence Point area. As soon as we arrived I saw some really good marks and bam, a nice 27 inch fish! We continued to work this area with both jig raps and slow death rigs tipped with a half crawler only to open cup up a smallmouth bass and had one more really good punch on the jig rap. Most of the fish we could see on the fish finders today were hanging in that 16 to 22 foot of water. We made a few more moves due to the wind but we were unable to fish many of the areas I wanted to concentrate on. That’s fishing some days and as a guide I can not control the fishes mood and or Mother Nature. We are going to play it safe tomorrow and fish the river below the Garrison Dam to somewhat stay out of the wind. I’m still offering trip up until October 31st!
