As we enter the second half of January, especially up here on Devils Lake. We will begin to experience a slow down of sorts in terms of bites. The depth finders will stay pretty busy with fish marks. However, the biters will tend to be fewer are farther between.
Condition wise things haven’t changed much. At least as far as getting worse. We are still seeing some slush in areas. Some areas that were worse early have firmed up some. Still plenty of snow on the ice and tracks of some sort are a must.
We have really had to pick our poison as far as what we are targeting each day. With the travel and the snow conditions. We are moving around in a much slower pace than we normally would go. Our scouting is even cut short due to this. So usually if we pick perch we fish perch all day and if we pick walleyes we stay on those. It’s too hard to travel on an average day to do both. Of course there are a few areas where you can catch a mixed bag.
Lots of fishing remains yet this winter. We will see some really good days and we will see some slower days. All part of the game I guess. I do have a couple spots in February yet for ice fishing. I’m slowly filling up the early spring fishing on the river near Bismarck. Get ahold of me if you want to get on the schedule.
