West Lake Sakakawea Fishing Report-Jan. 1st, 2019

I promised a report from Sakakawea after our outing on Woodhouse. One thing I will say is much of the lake remains wide open especially out east so we were forced to put the miles on. We decided to chase the reports of good fishing up towards the river section of the lake.
With that as our plan we do what we always do, reference Google Earth to find subtle things near or around the river channels to concentrate our efforts. We do this pretty much every place we go, wether it’s Sakakawea, Oahe and even all the small Prairie Lakes. It’s amazing the things a person can find!
It’s been quite a few years now since I have been up that way. It didn’t take long to figure out the bite is happening and has been for quite awhile. The fish houses were lined up like tinker toys on the channels edge. We found a stretch a little off the norm and away from all the traffic. I personally think you could pick any point near the channels edge and have success.
Dead rods was where it was at mostly for us. A plain hook and the biggest minnow in the bucket was the best! We did however get some fish on this winters favorite lure the Lindy Glow Spoons. We caught a mix of walleyes and saugers which is normal for up there. The trip was long but well worth it!
I’ll be returning to Lake Sakakawea this week to place the spear shacks. It’s time to start chasing the toothy critters. I will be offering guided spear trips so if interested please contact me here so we can get you reserved for a day! #mikepelusooutdoors
