Lake Oahe Fishing Report-Jan-7th, 2019

It’s been an interesting year on the ice so far this winter. We seem to be jamming all the seasons into a week. Cold, super cold, super warm, back to cold in such short windows of time. This raises hell with the ice, ridges, snow drifts and the bite.
I will say this, a person really needs to use caution! The area of Lake Oahe I’ve been on has ice anywhere from 14 inches to 3 inches. Yes, you read that correctly. I have an area I have been going and where I have been driving a lot. That ice is just fine. I needed to run back to where I parked my truck to grab buns and drinks for my girls. Of course I’m in an area way off the beaten path so I decided to take a short cut instead of following my trail. With the warm weather there are slush pockets and I hit one! I was fine but I did drop the front wheels of the 4 wheeler in.
With that I will advise caution if you decide to go down onto Lake Oahe. Yes, it’s not the safest place to go if you haven’t been down there at the moment. The fish are doing the normal Oahe routine. Right off the main river channel. Just like I have said in previous reports google earth is your friend to find subtle things or changes that will attract fish. Don’t be afraid to get aggressive with these fish! They seem to accommodate pretty much any presentation you throw at them and when they are on they are on! River channel edge right around 30 foot of water has been best for me!

I'm on the 18th tee box for the winter ice fishing season. Just need to keep it in the fairway and get up and down to close it out. Hard to believe it's coming to a close already. Goes fast and I'm already getting excited for the open water season to begin. Looks like...
