Lake Sakakawea Fishing Report

Lake Sakakawea is changing as I type.  The water is falling and the it is also warming up.  Creating an ever moving flow of fish.  The walleyes are chasing the smelt heavily at this time and this is causing anglers to struggle staying on a bite.  The fish are also moving extremely deep at times.  Lures of choice seem to be changing by the hour.  We are finding Cranks on leadcore and heavy bouncers with slow death and plain lindys to be the ticket to get the walleyes to bite.  Areas of focus are deeper main lake humps and points near or off the old river channel.  Another tactic that is working well is the popular jig rap again probing the depths and looking for the bigger fish.   Keep in mind if your fishing in depth of over 30 feet you will have to keep all fish caught.  these fish will not survive coming out of these depths in these water temps.  You hear folks talking about fizzing fish, but again, this is a temporary fix to see the fish swim away.  The fish will most likely die, so take what you need and leave them alone in that deep water if you can. If the wind blows the fish will move up into shallower water and you can get on the bite pretty quick but expect the bite to be short lived as the walleyes continue to move around a lot!  If you are looking to booking a trip please feel free to call and or email me at mikepelusooutdoors@gmail
