Bismarck, ND Fishing Guide
The State Record Walleye was caught on this stretch of river in 2021, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is broken a few more times right here in the very near future!
Spring and fall are the best times of the year with ice out averaging mid to late March. The spring run will begin right at ice-out, and remains strong into early June! For you guys looking to dust off the winter open water rust because your state is closed, look no further! You will have a chance at a fish of a lifetime right around the city limits of Bismarck! We’re a local Bismarck, ND fishing guide, who travels from the tailrace by Lake Sakakawea, all the way to the south end by Hazelton.
The Missouri River is no place to mess around however with lots of obstacles in the road such as sandbars, logs, rocks, and other debris. This is where my 40 plus years of fishing this system helps me read and stay on top of things on this constantly changing Missouri river system.
The fish will begin to taper off and head back down into Lake Oahe as the spawn ends and the water temps begin to rise. Expect these toothy critters to start showing back up near town (Bismarck, ND) in late September. Lures of choice are mostly jigs tipped with minnows or plastic in the spring and fall. Pitching shallow sandbars is my favorite tactic in early spring with vertical jigging in the fall. Let me tell you this is so addictive!
Good numbers of fish are caught with a chance at a trophy walleye especially early spring. Coming to fish with me on the Missouri River near Bismarck also gives you an opportunity to take in Bismarck’s other attractions. Hawk Tree Golf course and the States Capital just to name a couple.

Missouri River Fishing Report-April 29th, 2019
As Harry Carey used to say Holy Cow! Things have really gotten tough around the Bismarck/Mandan area as of late. Dropping water temps, spawn, and rising water are making things extremely difficult to put a solid pattern together. You can find the males out in the...
Missouri River Fishing Report-April 25th 2019
I was asked today why are the fish sometimes harder to catch during the spawn? Well, I’m not a fish expert by any means but I did offer up some of my thoughts. The biggest issue during a spawn is the fish are all in different moods. You have some that are thinking of...
Missouri River Fishing Report-April 22nd, 2019
Man oh man are things changing rapidly on the Missouri River right now! The spawn is on, hard to believe I’m saying this already, it feels like just yesterday I was giving reports on the boat ramps and open water. With things developing quickly with shifting sandbars,...
Missouri River Fishing Report-April 19th, 2019
As we start to close in towards the end of April here on the Missouri River we have lots of uncertainty. We are sitting here wondering when they are going to begin to let some water out of the dam. The rivers level north of Bismarck is extremely low. The Garrison Dam...
Missouri River Fishing Report-April 15th, 2019
I promised after I was done guiding this weekend, I would give you a fishing report from the Missouri River System near Bismarck. With our recent snowstorm we had on Friday, we saw our water temps drop significantly. Our weather Saturday was really nice! Probably our...
Missouri River Fishing Report-April 9th, 2019
With the crappy winter we had it’s finally spring! Or is it? I think if your like me, you are glued to the TV watching the developing storm that could potentially hit us. I wouldn’t necessarily be mad if we received the moisture in the form of rain. Snow, well that...
