It’s been a small break from the fishing reports from me here on the Mike Peluso Outdoors, but since I’m not a guy who likes to take chances, I needed to wait a tiny bit before I feel safer. Good news now, the reports are now going to be ice fishing reports for the next few months!

This weekend myself and some buddies traveled to Devils Lake to do some scouting for Percheyes Guide Service. First and foremost, the ice is pretty good across the whole Devils Lake System. 8 to 12 inches depending on where you go was the average. There are some ridges out there you are going to have to watch. I cannot stress enough that ice is never perfectly safe. Caution needs to be your main priority always! No fish or fishing in general is worth taking a risk and safety never should take the day off.

We concentrated on finding the perch. Those are Devils Lakes true winter bounty! We did however find some of those Devils Lake walleyes, but I’ll report on those in a serperate post.  Anyway, the Perch were kind of in the same mood that we left them last winter. We marked tons of fish and it was hard to get them fired up at times. Once you did however, you could usually pull 3 to 5 out of the flurry before they moved on. It’s crazy to me to see how nomadic they are. The usual tungsten jigs with wax worms worked really well! One of the Percheyes Guides came up with a different spin for his perch jigs and I’m going to have to keep that quiet for awhile. Let’s just say he wasn’t using any form of bait whatsoever. We concentrated our efforts on some very large flats out in the main lake area and fished 28 to 35 foot of water. A couple of the guys were doing some lure testing and PK lures has some good stuff coming out for perch.
